Winter activities

When the winter comes, it can be very cold in Sør-Varanger. One winter day in February 1999, the temperature went down to -52 ° C in Strand in the Pasvik valley. Such temperatures rarely occur though. Kirkenes and the surrounding areas have to face the fact that they are covered in snow around 6 month each year (snow from November to April). But this provides the opportunity for a lot of winter activities, which the people love so much up here.

Sør-Varanger's tour operators offer a lot of adventures for those who wish to participate in an organized excursion. If you want to do something on your own: you can easily enjoy the never-ending silence and be fascinated by the northern light just by leaving the city centre behind you in a 10 minute walk. Beside the tours that our tour operators offer, the possibility to arrange your own tour is great. The landscape in Sør-Varanger invites to cross-county skiing in our prepared tracks, but also for those who would like to take their own path off the tracks. The tourist information office will gladly assist you with any information and tips that you need. 

Activities that are offered in this winter time are dog-sledge trips, snowmobile tours, ice fishing, king crab safari, the snow hotel, sightseeing & relaxation in an arctic environment.

The best period to experience the winter activities in Kirkenes is from December to April.

- All tours start from the tourist information office in Kirkenes and transport from/to Kirkenes is included in the price lists.
