Activities during the winter When winter arrives it can get very cold in Sr-Varanger. One winter day in February 1999, a record-low temperature of -52 C (-61 F) was measured at Strand in the Pasvik Valley. However, we seldom experience such extreme temperatures. Kirkenes and the surrounding areas are covered with snow 6 months a year (November till May), and so there are opportunities for winter activities in the area. Our tour operators offer a wide range of activities and tours for those of you who want to participate in an organised excursion. If you don't want to partake in an organised activity, you are more than welcome to enjoy the peace and quiet, and maybe be amazed by the polar-lights (aurora borealis) by only moving 10 minutes out of the centre of Kirkenes. In addition to the tours offered by our operators, you have lots of opportunities of making your own. The landscape of the municipality of Sr-Varanger invites to cross country skiing, either in the prepared tracks or of course if you are feeling more adventurous, make your own tracks.
