Kirkenes

Kirkenes is the centre of the Municipality of Sr-Varanger, and got it's city status is 1998. When Norway first got it's constitution in 1814, it didn't apply to Sr-Varanger. First in 1826 was this area made Norwegian. Sr-Varanger is the only municipality in Norway bordering to both Russia (196 km of border) and Finland (140 km of border). The 196 km of border towards Russia is NATO's only direct border to Russia. Taking into account the surrounding settlements, there is a population of approx. 6000 in the Kirkenes area. The municipality has a diverse population with inhabitants from 60 different nationalities. The largest groups, beside the Norwegian, come from Russia, Bosnia and the Fillippines. Kirkenes (70N 30E) is as far east as Istanbul and Kairo and as far north as Point Barrow in Alaska. Kirkenes is also on the same latitude as Troms, but an hour's flight due east. The Pasvik Valley stretches southwards to the same latitude as Harstad. In addition, almost the entire country of Finland lies west of Sr-Varanger.

Kirkenes has a modern town centre with a good selection in shops, restaurants and accommodation. Come visit and go for a walk in the town centre, visit the museums or join one of our excursions in the local area.
